About Gadget Girl
When I was child, it was common for me to slip out early in the morning through the back door with the family dog and follow the trails behind the house. The freedom of walking down the path, the dog sniffing her way ahead, with adventurous thoughts streaking through my mind. This was way back when the innocence of youth thought nothing of dangerous individuals who may be roaming the countryside. I was quite the tomboy in the day, climbing evergreen trees way up high, building tree forts, and dreaming of adventures of the future.
My hiking life took off in the 1970's in high school with the hiking club. My first backpacking trip included a six pack of pop, cans of food, a canvas tent, and heavy leather boots. Five miles later, blisters had popped, my back ached, and I loved every minute of it. I learned a lot from those early trips. Instead of a six pack of pop, I took only one. A canvas tent became a heavy nylon type of tent. I kept the leather boots, not having a clue that feet swell when hot and sweaty, and I continued having blisters. Moleskin was recommended but simply just covered the big ugly blisters.
Real life intervened with marriage with the love of my life and the fork in the trail took us down the path of building a life together. My husband and I continued the big adventure of learning how to windsurf, mountain biking, and backcountry skiing. Our son came along and we simply took him with us on our adventures. Many years later, my passion for backpacking and hiking rose to the forefront once more and during a backpacking trip with the girls, we ran into Pacific Crest Trail thru hikers. What a concept! Hiking from the Mexico border to the Canadian border!
I was given the trail name of Gadget Girl back in 2009, based on the love of trying new gadgets related to hiking and carrying cool gear like solar panels, personal locator device, etc.
My hiking base is in the Pacific Northwest and my playground runs from Mt Hood to Mt Adams.
I completed the Pacific Crest Trail in August 2018 after section hiking it starting in 2009.
This website is a work in progress and is updated when I can, usually after hiking!
